He influenced me to read the works of Jules Verne & H.G. For example, in many bookstores, George Orwell's 1984 and the works of H.G. From the mid 1800's until the beginning of World War II, the hunger in Italy for science fiction was vast, in large part due to the popularity of such writers as Jules Verne and H.G. They're not used much anymore in this 21st Century world of social media, but prefaces gave you an insight on what the author had in mind when he or she developed their work, and opinions relating to it. Wells: 25 Books in One Volume (Unexpurgated Edition) is a treasure trove of the author's works, famous and otherwise. It seems rather fitting that Wells, the father of science fiction, would be among the first to have his writings digitally recorded and distributed. Most of the work consumed was either distributed through publishers like Sonzogno who put out, amongst countless other things, the complete works of Jules Verne at modest prices, or periodicals, such as Per Terra e Per Mare, La Sfinge, La Domenica del Corriere, etc. Wells and Jules Verne are in the Classics section. Meanwhile, the works of Michael Crichton, including Sphere and Jurassic Park are in Fiction. I collected Paper Mache' recreations of his creatures at conventions from a sculptor named Johnny Fischner, because no toys existed.
